For the macroscopic world, classical thermodynamics formulates the laws governing the transformation of various forms of energy into each other. Stochastic thermodynamics extends these concepts to micro- and nano-systems embedded or coupled to a heat bath where fluctuations play a dominant role. Examples are colloidal particles in time-dependent laser traps, single biomolecules manipulated by optical tweezers or AFM tips, and transport through quantum dots. For these systems, exact non-equilibrium relations like the Jarzynski relation, fluctuation theorems and, most recently, a thermodynamic uncertainty relation have been discovered. I will introduce the main principles, show a few experimental applications, and discuss the universal trade-off between the thermodynamic cost and the precision of any biomolecular, or, more generally, of any isothermal non-equilibrium process.

One of the most exciting developments in astronomy is the discovery of planets around stars other than our Sun. Nearly 1000 exo-planets have now been detected. But how do these planets form, and why are they so different from our own solar system? Which ingredients are available to build them? How are their parent stars formed? Thanks to powerful new telescopes, in particular the Herschel Space Observatory and pioneering ground-based and airborne telescopes at infrared and millimeter wavelengths, astronomers are starting to address these age-old questions scientifically. In this talk, an overview will be given of how stars and planets are born in the extremely cold and tenuous clouds between the stars in the Milky Way. Special attention will be given to the formation of protoplanetary disks in the embedded phase and their evolution. These clouds also contain water and a surprisingly rich variety of organic material. How and where was the water formed that is now in our oceans on Earth? Can these organic molecules end up on new planets and form the basis for pre-biotic material and eventually life? The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), under construction in Chile and planned to be fully operational by late 2013, will be able to zoom into the planet-forming zones of disks around young stars and revolutionize this field in the near future.

5-9th March 2012; Mo-Fr 9:30 - 17:00, SR THP/CIP-Pool. This intensive week is intended to provide both a working understanding and real hands-on experience with the essential numerical techniques of solid state many-body physics. Rather than a 'black-box' philosophy, the course aims to discuss the theory and physics underpinning numerical approaches. Lectures will introduce three models of central importance: the Ising model, the Anderson impurity model, and the Hubbard model. Using these as concrete examples, the Monte Carlo, Numerical Renormalization Group and Density Matrix Renormalization Group techniques will be discussed. Students will also gain supervised practical hands-on experience writing, using and modifying simple computer codes to solve real problems. This BCGS intensive week aims at providing an in-depth insight of an LHC experiment, including physics and detectors. What does one need to know to address the physics questions at the LHC, to build an LHC detector and to analyze LHC data? While following these lines, particular emphasis is given to the physics currently done and expected at the LHC (Standard Model, Higgs, SUSY, Extra Dimensions), the scientific and technical requirements of LHC detectors, the physics of tracking and energy measuring detectors, the necessity of and a hands-on tutorial into the "how-to" of designing integrated circuits (chips), the experimental methods to address the LHC physics questions
