Success stories and challenges between algebra and statistics

Thomas Kahle

The field of algebraic statistics is concerned with the
interplay of techniques from commutative algebra, combinatorics,
(real) algebraic geometry, and related fields with problems
arising in data analysis. Since its inception in the late 1990s,
it has brought forward both new results in statistics as well as
challenging research directions in pure mathematics. We survey
some of these developments.
