Long-term correlations in nature: On the clustering of extreme events and the estimation of external trends

In this talk, I discuss  long-term memory  in nature (particularly in climate) and its implications for the occurrence of extremes. I also show how external trends can be estimated in records with long-term memory and apply the results to the estimation of  anthropogenic global warming.
