Building Quantum Order, One Step at a Time

Frank Pollmann

A key task for quantum computers and simulators is to prepare interesting many-body states, such as magnets or topologically ordered phases. I will start with an overview of the main ways to do this. I will then focus on sequential circuits, which build a state step by step and do it as fast as physics allows. Their weak point is noise: one error during preparation can be passed along by later steps and ruin the whole state. I will then present recent work showing how to design circuits that contain such errors with simple local operations. Examples include magnetic order in three dimensions and topological order in four dimensions. This makes reliable state preparation possible even on noisy hardware.
