Non-ergodic quantum operator dynamics from causal constraints

Marcell Kovacs

Operator spreading in brickwork quantum circuits offers a simple toy model of interacting quantum dynamics with a high-degree of analytical tractability. This talk concerns localised operator evolution within this paradigm in which local operators have restricted spreading under time-periodic unitary evolution. By developing the operator algebraic theory for this kind of local constraint, I will discuss its relation to local symmetries and standard probes of quantum ergodicity such as entanglement scaling and spectral correlations. As an application, I show that time-periodic brickwork Clifford circuits exhibit robust non-ergodic dynamics under spatially random, but generic, perturbations. Our results offer an analytically salient description of operator localisation using quantum information techniques.
