Subdimensional criticality in Rydberg atom arrays

The universal aspects of quantum critical phenomena are usually captured by effective field theories describing the gapless excitations that emerge at critical points. Constructing such continuum descriptions becomes particularly challenging in systems with mobility-constrained excitations. In this talk, I will discuss a model of Rydberg atoms arranged in a crossed-chain geometry that realizes a phase in which, despite the underlying two-dimensional coupling, the elementary excitations are domain walls restricted to move along straight lines. I will present numerical evidence for the sub-extensive entropy in the ordered phase and discuss an effective field theory for the phase transition formulated in terms of coupled Ising conformal field theories.
