The rise of probability in physics — a personal view

Later than in other fields of science but eventually even more strongly probability has come to play a dominant role in physical theories. Starting with the middle of the nineteenth century in classical physics, it now dominates classical and quantum statistics, quantum theory, classical chaos, and random-matrix theory. I follow the lines of the historical development and show how in all cases probability forced itself upon the physicists of the time, often against their will.
