New spintronics devices for green information technology

A key step to reducing power consumption of mobile devices is to replace volatile memory by fast non-volatile spintronic memory. Novel low power memories with switching by spin-polarized currents have been proposed. We study the rich physics of the interaction between magnetization and spin currents as well as photons, and we use these to excite spin dynamics and manipulate the magnetization on ultrafast timescales. We are probing the magnetization dynamics to gauge the ultimate speed limits of spin angular momentum transfer that governs device switching speed.
